Ramblings. Musings. Strange Eatings.

a sacrifice to the travel gods

When you’re traveling on a budget, you become hyper-aware of money.

How much is that? What’s that in dollars, again? Should we go somewhere else?

Exchange rates, colorful bills, funny coins, you get good at dividing by 700s, multiplying by 1.6s and remembering that 200 dirham equals about $25 …

So when I mention that today I sacrificed 400 dirham to the travel gods, you get what I’m saying.

Scheisse!

At some point during our stroll through the Medina, 400 dirham fell out of my pocket. I thought I had a good system: keep some money in the little change pocket of my jeans / the rest down low, folded-up-like.

That down-low cash must have flipped out when I pulled out my camera somewhere in a museum or when trying to get a candid shot among the souqs.

It certainly chaps my ass, but it’s not the end of the world. Lesson learned. System changed.

At least today was someone’s lucky day.
